Today we continued with “How to Examine a Sick Person”. Dr. Buie explained several body systems including the eye, kidneys, bladder, intestines, and a then demonstrated to the student how to compete a neurological exam. When he taught the students about the intestines, he had them listen to their bowel sounds with their new stethoscopes. The youngest member of our class (the cook’s daughter) helped supervise all 21 Barefoot Doctor students as seen in the photo.

In the afternoon, Gayle Buie taught the class about intestinal worms. Dr. Nilson interjected with a graphic video about the removal of intestinal roundworm infestation. Yuck! They helped set up and work with the audio response system, which will allow the teachers to receive instant feedback on question they ask the students during lecture. The afternoon concluded with the students practicing their technique for taking and recording the blood pressure of patients. Their readings were checked for accuracy and they all had very consistent findings.

Overall another successful day of teaching.
