Today started the second phase of
Community Health Education (and Evangelism) training for the Barefoot Doctor
training. Their first exercise this morning was a review in small groups of the
12 CHE core values. Each of their small
groups was given a cardboard box with one core value on each of them. Members
of each group presented an explanation of each core value to the group. These core
values were: 'Development Not Relief', 'Integration of Spiritual &
Physical', 'Invitation', 'Use of Local Resources', Multiplication', 'Prevention
vs Cure', 'Facilitating not Doing', 'Sustainable', 'Community Ownership',
'Mature Christian Leadership', 'Relationship Building', and 'Spirit Led'.
Their next exercise was to list the
common illnesses that occur in the communities they live and serve in. They
then considered in small groups the negative effects the illnesses had on
individuals, families, and communities. Conversely, they considered what the
positive effects would be on each of the three if these illnesses were
prevented.
The session on the topic of good
health habits began with students sharing specific habits that result in good
health as well as factors that would encourage the forming of these habits.
Throughout the training, Joanna and I
explained the facilitation techniques that were being used in the lessons. Then the reasons why these techniques were
used was discussed. This was to help the students be more effective in the
communities they work in to help people process new information and to encourage
changed behavior in forming good health habits and practicing prevention.
David Crist
We are blessed to have David Crist
and Joanna Geiger return for our students’ second week of CHE training at the
Barefoot Doctors School.
Please remember them and the students
in your prayers this week. I'm sure our translators, Abraham and Timothy, would also appreciate your prayers.
