This
morning, Dr. Nilson discussed traditional v. modern medicine from the chapter
“Home Cures, and Popular Beliefs”. One of the students brought up the subject
of myrrh because they used it in wounds, and after us westerners had some
trouble understanding the concept, our translator finally said, “Like the
Wiseman gave Jesus: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.”

The discussion on
myrrh was very interesting. We discussed the medicinal qualities, but during
the morning break the theological part of it was also discussed because myrrh was
given to Jesus. Someone noted that the wisemen brought Jesus symbolic gifts.
The gold was riches, a gift for a king. The frankincense was used by priests.
But myrrh was probably the most interesting of the three gifts as it was used
for embalming dead people, a kind of foreshadowing of Jesus being the ultimate
sacrifice for human sin. After lunch, the students had their first test and
they did well.

Tomorrow they have a field trip to an
experimental farm where they cook with biogas collected from pig manure and
raise pigs with all natural homemade feed that increases the yield and
decreases the smell of the pigs.

It is amazing how quickly this week has gone,
and we are very enthusiastic about teaching these students in the weeks to
come, and are excited about all that they will learn.
