Medical Day 1

Today was the first day of medical training at KLC. The morning started off by shedding some light on the subject of what it means to be a Barefoot Doctor. Each student received a flashlight for their medical kit to emphasize the point that the Barefoot Doctor’s knowledge will shine light on the medical issues in their areas, much like the Bible sheds light on truth and spiritual matters.

One of our favorite answers for that question (what they thought Barefoot Doctors were) was straight from scripture:  “preaching the gospel and healing people everywhere” (Luke 9:6)
Later in the morning, we asked the students why they want to become Barefoot Doctors. One of the responses from the students was “I learn medicine, I have medicine knowledge, I help my village.” In one way or another, they all answered that they wanted to help their families, village, and communities to understand health care and health education because there is not much health care knowledge in Myanmar.
Then we introduced them to their textbook, and began teaching them how to properly look up illnesses, symptoms, and medicines. Dr. Nilson lectured the students that their Bible is their textbook for spiritual matters, and that their Where There is no Doctor textbook is their bible for medical knowledge. He also noted that although medicine changes all the time, the Bible never changes.

The class was introduced, not only to Dr. Bjorn Nilson today, but also to Dr. Jim Buie and his wonderful wife, nurse Gale Buie.
