We were very pleased to start the medical portion of our training at the Barefoot Doctor School today. We introduced David Crist and Joanna Geiger as our instructors for the week. They both teach Community Health Evangelism, and they did a great job this first day. Here they are being introduced to the students.
David lives in Chiang Mai and has taught with CHE for a long time. Joanna is newer to their program, but she has been in Thailand for three years. The teaching method in CHE really gets the students involved in the learning process. While they are learning the CHE materials they are also learning how to go into a village and help the village learn the things CHE teaches. The students are learning how to use CHE materials in the villages they will go to. Here are some pictures of David and Joanna teaching.
You can tell the students enjoy getting involved in the learning process. Many of the lessons are introduced/started by a short drama or reading by the students themselves. We gave one of the students a full-page story to read for the class this morning. By the time he was asked to present it this afternoon, he just got up and told the whole story without notes. Two other students had a skit to share, and they just got up and did it without hesitation.
The students work in groups a lot, and it will be fun to learn along with them this week. We thank David and Joanna for coming, and we are anticipating a great week!
